Fun Ways to Get Your Pet Ready for Summer

Now that the weather is heating up and the sun is out in full force, it’s time to get your pet ready for summer. While some animals can handle the heat, others need special consideration. If you’re planning any summer trips or travel, you should make sure your pet is ready. Here are some fun ways you can get your pet ready for summer:

Stay Cool & Hydrated

The most important thing to do to protect your pet in the hot summer months is to help him stay cool and hydrated. Make sure he has plenty of fresh, cool water to drink. Get him a wet bandana or cooling vest that will help regulate his temperature. Make sure he has a cool place to rest during the day. Consider getting him a cooling mat or some fun water toys that he can use if he is outside with you during the day. Don’t leave him outside unattended, however, and try to limit your sun time to 20-30 minute increments.

Take a Trip Somewhere Cooler

If your pet is as uncomfortable in the heat as you are, consider taking a trip to somewhere cooler. Go for a day hike at a higher elevation, take a car ride to a cooler climate, or visit your closest lake or other body of water. Just don’t forget to stay hydrated and keep your pet’s collar and tags on.

Protect Them from Pests

Summer is also the perfect time to revisit your pet’s pest control methods. With more time spent outside, your pet will be exposed to ticks, fleas, and other dangerous parasites. Visit your veterinarian and make sure that your pet’s flea and tick prevention is up to date, and that they get their next dose of heartworm medication.

If you’re planning a trip with your pet or preparing to board him at a kennel during your vacation, make sure to visit your veterinarian first. Your veterinarian can give your pet a clean bill of health and make sure he has all the vaccinations he needs.
